Diaspora investor guide

Your legal status changes
the questions you must ask.

“Diaspora” is a social description, not one legal investor category. Citizenship, Ethiopian-origin status, residence, source of funds and the treatment you request can affect onboarding and foreign-exchange handling.

Start here

Identify the category that applies to you.

Ethiopian citizen abroad

Residence abroad does not automatically remove Ethiopian citizenship. Ask how the provider handles your overseas address, tax residence, identification and funding route.

Foreign national of Ethiopian origin

ECMA materials distinguish people who prefer Ethiopian-national treatment from those treated as foreign investors. Confirm the documents and election accepted by the provider.

Foreign investor treatment

The Capital Market Proclamation includes foreign nationals, foreign enterprises and Ethiopians permanently abroad who prefer foreign-investor treatment. Additional foreign-exchange and repatriation questions may apply.

Before sending money

A six-question checklist

  1. 1

Who is licensed to serve me?

Verify the institution and the exact licence on ECMA’s current register. A company name or social-media account is not proof.

  2. 2

Which investor classification will you use?

Ask the provider to state your classification and the documents supporting it before account opening.

  3. 3

    How will securities be held?

Confirm the securities account, custody arrangement, statements, transaction confirmations and complaint path.

  4. 4

    How can funds enter Ethiopia?

Ask which bank account, currency, transfer reference and evidence of foreign-source funds are required.

  5. 5

    How can proceeds leave later?

Get the current rules for dividends, sale proceeds, taxes, documentation and foreign-currency repatriation in writing from the relevant licensed institutions.

  6. 6

    What is the full cost?

Request brokerage, custody, exchange, settlement, banking, conversion and tax-related charges before placing an order.

Regulatory caution

Do not treat a draft rule as final law.

ECMA published a draft Foreign Portfolio Investment Regulation in September 2026. A draft can show policy direction, but it is not a dependable basis for promising eligibility, account opening or repatriation. This page therefore explains what to verify instead of claiming that every diaspora investor can already follow one universal route.

Never send investment money to a person’s account, pay for “guaranteed allocation,” or rely on an unverified WhatsApp or Telegram contact.
